Single room pub with bar in corner opposite entrance. On my early evening visit the front door was most definitely not bolted and the venue was busy with chaps who looked like they had just come off their shifts in the docks area. Right of the door there is a pool table and a small low stage to the left of the door. Big screen was showing music videos but with no volume and a separate soundtrack at a loud volume that confused the hell out of me. There were a couple of illuminated dart boards suggesting this was a popular darting venue. Regular mix of normal height and high tables dotted around the venue. Pretty average small town centre pub. Sky Sports advertising quite prominent suggesting people are attracted by the offering of live sports coverage and the chance to play darts or pool.

No cask. Keg choices were Theakston Mild, Moretti, Guinness (regular and the extra cold option), Fosters, both regular and dark fruits Strongbow, JS, K1664, Cruz, Inch's cider and Carling. Seemed everyone here was drinking lager so I went for a pint of the Theakston’s, which was perfectly adequate and about as good as you could expect to get in this type of pub.

Was my least favourite of the three pubs on the High St I visited within the one hour I had to drink here and probably the only one that I wouldn’t bother to return to if I found myself here with some time to kill. It is what it is but it isn’t for me.

After my disappointing non-visit in February last year I decided to give the White Hart another go. Thankfully there were no fleeing staff and I was served promptly even though the pub was busy with people watching football. This place is Newhaven’s sports pub with Sky Sports that is shown on the plasma screens that are found throughout this L shaped pub. There are two dartboards, a jukebox and to the left of the bar is a pool table. Harvey’s Best was available from the lone hand pump, but everyone seemed to be drinking the generic lager. Cheap pub grub is served throughout the day and there is a late license until midnight on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Being the only real pub that shows Sky Sports there was an interesting mix of people. These ranged from normal law abiding citizens to others who I would steer well clear of.

Being a fan of live sport I would use this place to watch the odd football match if I lived locally, but I wouldn’t become a regular as there are better pubs in Newhaven.

I approached the White Hart at 22:15 last night (Monday) and I was just about to push the door open when the barmaid came rushing out and locked up. She told me that it was too quiet before running to a waiting car and speeding off. Maybe when I’m next in Newhaven I will make this pub my first point of call to make sure I get a drink.
