A long, stone built pub by a lane leading from Widecombe in the Moor. Inside, a corridor leads to three rooms-the bar to the left, and two parlours to the right with the obligatory open fires. Outside, a pleasant garden accessed across a gurgling stream is home to various free ranging fowls .It probably gets rammed in the summer months, but very pleasant in the Autumn.
The bar is quite a squeeze in busy times, with a de facto queuing system: cask ale and Devon cider is served from a stillage behind the servery. All beers were in fine condition on our two visits in late September, with honours going to Teignworthy’s Rugglestone Moor Beer. Good honest food and efficient service.
Visits 23rd and 25th.September 2025.

Update September 2013. Blissfully little changes here. Fortunately the beer is on the up with Teignworthy's Neap Tide now a house beer, Dartmoor Legend also available - two of the better Devon breweries. Hence one point up to 8/10.

Came for lunch on a typical Dartmoor summers day - cold, windy and drizzly but the pub was busy, if a little chilly. (can't they light fires in August?) Excellent pub and one of my faves but not perfect. 3 beers, Exmoor, Butcombe (Somerset) and Tribute (Cornwall). Living in Somerset as i do where all 3 of those are common as muck I was a tad disappointed that none of the 40 or so Devon breweries where represented, hence a miserly 8/10. Food portions are big - beware!
