Busy and lively pub tucked away in the village of Sutton Poyntz.

We arrived here with the hope of eating. After a short wait, staff found us a table, albeit next to a group of extremely lively women who had clearly had several too many. It made for a very busy drinking/dining experience, but entertaining nonetheless.

St Austell Proper Job appears to be a mainstay here. Guests were Dartmoor Jail Ale, Ringwood Forty Niner and a fourth beer badged as "The Springhead". I asked the barman who brewed it and was expecting a blank look, but was instead reliably informed that it was from Laine's of Brighton. Suitably impressed, I ordered one and it was quite pleasant.

That is more than I can say for the burgers we had, which were distinctly average. Nevertheless, with accommodating staff and a range of real ales, I wouldn't rule out a return visit to this lively hostelry.

Found this place on a wet Sunday evening, after following the signs from the main road. Only a few locals at the bar, the rest of the place being fairly dark we weren't hopeful of a meal or a decent pint but were pleasantly surprised to get both. Usual fizzy stuff on offer, plus 3 handpulls - Proper Job, Doombar and Abbott ale, the Abbott was a good pint.
We missed the carvery but the menu was varied enough and the food was very good (excellent steak).
A bit off the beaten track, but worth finding.

The Springhead is a short drive from Preston down a country lane in the small village of Sutton poyntz. The village has a river that runs through it which the pub faces at a willow tree lined shallow section. My visit was late on Tuesday afternoon about a month ago which was just after the Sutton Poyntz annual scarecrow competition. This explained why there were wellington boots sticking out of the river and the presence of a rather rotund scarecrow by the pub’s car park entrance. This car park is to the right of the pub and beyond is a seating area and some children’s climbing apparatus. The rear of the pub affords views of the downs and the Osmington White Horse hill figure.
The interior of the pub is made up by a dining area to the right and the bar area to the left. I turned up mob handed at 17:30 just after the kitchen had opened and the eight of us were permitted to sit at a large table at the end of the bar. The kitchen remains open until 20:30 and I am unsure of the lunch serving times. There is an a la carte, pub and children’s menu so the prices vary greatly. We all ate and were happy with the price, portions and service.
The bar is stocked with standard draught and I counted three hand pumps. One of these was unused leaving Doom Bar and Dorset Brewing Company’s Jurassic as the ale options.
I didn’t spot any televisions in here and I do not recall any music in the background.

This is a food led pub so I wouldn’t plan a session in here, but for a nice spot of lunch or dinner in a picturesque part of Dorset you can’t really go wrong.
