Known as the Cranies - like the Brickmakers is always the Brickies, I guess - this is a fine stand-alone building a short walk from Carlisle station, a route which admittedly passes several other pubs, but I thought I'd give this a try. It's a beautiful traditional pub with two rooms plus what I think of as side chapels, small rooms divided by a low screen; there's also a games room to the rear. The bar has a brass foot rail and hooks, but no real ale. I went for the Theakstons Dark on keg, which was ok. The former landlord, now deceased, was a collector who was addicted to buying stuff from second hand shops. His collection of instruments is suspended from the ceiling, and there are ornaments and bric-a-brac everywhere. Staff and locals speak of him with great respect.

Having discovered this place I came back a few weeks later between trains, but it wasn't as good, because the landlady had a dog with her, and of course everyone loves dogs don't they. Especially demanding and overweight pub dogs.
