We decided to call in here after visiting a few pubs in Buxton earlier in the day, and before walking along the canal into New Mills. It's a large roadside pub at the beginning of the village, with a view over the valley from the rear. I knew it had a reputation for real ale, so was unsurprised to see nine hand pumps on the bar. It was something of a surprise, on chatting to the licensee, to discover that he was leaving at the end of the month after 12 years here. Most of the beers were from established breweries, varying from Camerons Mariner Best Bitter and Otter Bitter to Roosters Yankee, Purity Mad Goose and Salopian Oracle. I'd have liked to have seen a darker beer, or something really off the wall, as there was a lack of adventure in the offering, but maybe that's a little picky. I went for a seasonal from Otter and also the Camerons, and although they were in very good condition, neither of them were particularly memorable.

Large traditional pub serving a choice of seven hand pulled ales out of nine pumps on our visit. We went for the Wily Fox Brewery Fox Hat and Bradfield Farmer's Blonde, which were both worthy of a second pint. The pub's layout consisted of a enclosed front room on the left of entrance. A similar sized open plan room on the right, the bar could be found further along from this, down the right hand wall which had an oak counter, pine front and brass rail running around the perimeter of the bar top. We took our beers and sat near the open fire in the central part of the pub. There was also a rear room, which was set out for dining. The locals were friendly and chatty and the prices for food were very reasonable.
