Part of the now familiar chain of brew pubs to be found across the South of England, this is the Southsea counterpart to the older venue in Central Portsmouth. As with its sister site, this is a pub converted venue, inhabiting the former White Horse, and I thought the place really benefitted from this, retaining a pub-feel despite the modernised interior and prominent brew-plant. You enter via a rather large front patio which boasts a great many picnic benches as well as benches in beach-hut style booths and there is a good deal of greenery out here to make it feel like a proper garden. The main bar area is a bare boarded, open-plan room which has been broken up by a couple of brick pillars. Some lounge seating is available to the front right, under a modern pub mirror that has been treated to make it look much older. Elsewhere, high tables and stools comprise the majority of the seating options, with some tables boasting display cases under their tops, each with displays of different hop varieties in them, whilst a more comprehensive hop and malt display can be found over on the wall to the left. The bar runs along the rear wall and has a nice traditional counter that’s been given a more modern lick of paint, whilst the bar back has old-fashioned looking signage counterpointed by a beer board that seemingly has taken its inspiration from a game a Scrabble. Some banquette booths under a collection of board games along the left-hand wall, round out the seating options in this room and there is a walkway here that will take you past the brewery equipment and on into a large side-room. This is a split-level space with a good mix of seating including tub chairs and button backed banquettes, whilst a table in the centre of the room appeared to have some sort of feature built into it, with a large extractor hood overhead. Décor here was fairly restrained, with several old portraits and the like on show whilst a poppy soundtrack played away quietly in the background.
Sadly, only two of their beers were available on handpull – Great Escape and Langtry’s – whilst two more were ‘Coming Soon’. A friendly barman served me a decent enough half of the Langtry’s which was obtained after a period stood in a long, winding queue which snaked its way through the pub, when it might better have spread itself along the length of the bar.
I was a bit disappointed by the beer choice in here but appreciate we may have caught the place on a bad day. Aside from that, I quite liked the way this pub has been converted into part of the chain and enjoyed drinking in the sun on their pleasant patio. There are plenty of good pubs around this part of town and whilst this one doesn’t really challenge for top spot, it certainly merits a look in passing or inclusion on a crawl.

I visited the Brewhouse Southsea on a recent Friday afternoon not long after visiting the much smaller Brewhouse in Portsmouth. The major draw of this place seems to be the large beer garden out the front that houses lots of picnic tables that were populated by the young movers and shakers of the area. Along the right-hand side of the garden are four beach huts that can be booked online. The bar, located at the rear of the beer garden, has a counter that runs along the back wall. I counted four hand pumps, two of which were off, and a large craft keg range. I visited as part of a Pubs Galore crawl so we arrived en masse and had to form an orderly queue to the bar. It gave us lots of time to discuss if the décor which resembles an American diner. To the left of the bar area is a separate restaurant which I didn’t visit. In between the bar and the restaurant is the in-house Cockleshell Brewery, which thankfully wasn’t brewing during my visit (I hate the smell).
This is certainly a nice spot for a few beers on a warm and sunny day, but I wouldn’t want to stay too long during inclement weather as the bar area is not very comfortable or interesting.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Brewhouse & Kitchen
The main building looks like a villa, with the gateway into the spacious front patio beer garden reinforcing that initial impression. Once inside, the bar is opposite the entrance with the small brew kit off to the left. Disappointingly, just two Brewhouse & Kitchen beers from the four handpumps: Langtry's (£1.70, half) and Great Escape, but you can do a lot worse than whiling away some time sitting outside in the sunshine here.
