Previously The Augustus John, this town pub was substantially renovated in 2020 and now has a strong railway theme as suggested by the name. This includes a railway carriage in the car park, railway theme names to all the public rooms and décor reminiscent of Victorian railway stations. The car park is large and easily accessible from both sides, and there is an outside courtyard instead of a proper garden. There is a large main bar (‘Waiting Room’) inside and a smaller dining room (‘Dining Car’) at one end. The bar counter has a ‘Station Buffet’ sign hanging over it. They also offer B&B. It was all very clean and tidy. We found the staff exceptionally dim, while the other customers were largely people travelling on business. It was surprisingly devoid of locals. Ales on were Flack’s Double Drop, Piddle’s Cocky, and Tribute. The keg choices were Mahon, Camden Hells and Stout, something called ‘Railway Steam Bitter’, and there was a single cider, Orchard Pig Reveller. A bit of a paradox, really, but somehow it seemed to work, and I’d be happy to stay here or drop in for a quick pint while passing.

It's amazing how a once-excellent source of food can go so far downhill. Tried lunch. My king-prawn stir-fry (£12.95) wasn't a stir-fry -- merely heated prawns in a sweet-chilli sauce, served with (properly-cooked) rice and a pretty bland salad. It was at least edible, which is more than can be said for my wife's Thai chicken curry (£9.95). This appeared to have been reheated at least once: the chicken, the mange-tout, the carrot and the mini-corn-cobs turned to mush with a little attention from a fork.
The Ringwood Best Bitter was good.
Absolutely will not return!
