Village pub consisting of a small bar and a larger dining area. There is also an outdoor garden area with children's play equipment. There is also an undercover space with a pool table adjacent to the bar. Nearly all tables were set out for food, even in the bar area, where most tables were occupied by a mixture of drinkers and diners. One table was an old arcade machine. But I'm not sure if it was still functioning. There was a fireplace, which was unlit despite it being fairly cold outside. Dogs are allowed.
Plenty of staff were on hand to serve. Regular cask ales are St Austell Proper Job & Timothy Taylor Landlord. The guest beer was Black Sheep Best Bitter, leaving a fourth handpull unclipped. Beavertown Neck Oil was available on keg, with the cider being Aspall's.
A nice place with a characterful bar, but with a clear focus on food.

Unexpected revisit. COVID meant we ended-up in the small characterful rear bar which has a traditional 1940’s feel. Four pretty samey ales on the go; Ringwood Best, Andwell King John, West Berks GoB and Hogs Back TEA (NBSS 3.5). The Rothaus is still available, though noticed too late! Still a very good place with good cask, but of beer variety might have helped this time.

Wonderfully well-maintained building both inside and out. The impressive trellis-arch entrance gives way to three(!) separate and exquisitely-maintained garden areas including a kids play zone. The interior consists of two rooms, to the right for posh dining behind a door and the left mainly for drinking (if a little small for all the punters that were in doing just that). Four ales offered at 3.20pp; Doom Bar, West Berks Good Old Boy, Three Castles Saxon Archer and Brakspear Ordinary. The quality of my West Berks was good (though over-cold) and the Saxon Archer was a superb drop at a better temperature. There was also a gigantic Rothaus Pils ceramic font – I couldn’t resist giving it a go and for £2 a half got a pretty good German lager in a rather sexy branded glass which I had to try hard not to swipe. Given the location and ambience, prices were surprisingly cheap for the drink. Features of note in the main bar include a wood burning stove and a large glass case of bottled spirit miniatures. The covered patio area for smokers was a cut above the usual and afforded a nice view over the adjacent wheat field. All-in-all, this is a lovely place and I’d happily pop back. Rated 9
