Traditional old building with a thatched roof, chocolate box style. A Wadworth pub with three of their ales, my Swordfish was fair if a little flat. Country inn ambience inside with two rooms, a small corner one on the left (oddly containing one of those end-of-pier cartoon couples for you put your head through) and a much larger opened-out room through a door to the right, catering for the dining trade. Flagstone floor, exposed brick, low beams (very low in some places), wood burning stoves and proper fire. Old skool armchairs from your Nan’s house and a very natty wood and mirror panelled section to the right rear. Clean and tidy throughout. Impressive rear garden, sloped and grassed. Selection of papers. Tidy place that will appeal to most people and if the beer was a wee bit better I’d have gone a point higher.

The Old Bell and Crown is a Wadworths tied pub in the tiny village of Hatherden, just off the Hungerford Road. There is a small bar adjacent to the carpark which had a roaring fire but was empty. The much larger (extended) main bar had a woodburner and fire, and was well populated. There are low beams throughout (low enough to hit your head on if not careful, and there are signs warning of this). Floors are of traditional materials, and there is a variety of seats, tables and other fittings. All this makes for a very cosy interior. The welcome from staff and locals alike was warm and genuinely friendly. A fair range of good, well cooked and reasonably priced food was on offer, and the wine list was interesting and diverse. There were 3 ales on, all Wadworths, so I sampled all 3 - they were in perfect condition. This is the best new (to me) pub I've found in a long time and I have no doubt that I will be returning whenever the opportunity presents itself.
