Appleby town centre has some very attractive buildings, and this is certainly one of them, occupying a corner at the end of Boroughgate between a surprisingly good looking Spar and the glorious sandstone church. The interior is beautiful, with the well-maintained floorboards being particularly striking, but the bar counter is also noteworthy (and has hooks!). There are three hand pumps on the bar, with two beers both from Robinsons at the time of my visit: Cumbria Way and Dizzy Blonde. I had a half of the former, which was ok but nothing special. I still remember Hartley's beers with a degree of fondness and this tends to colour my view of Robinsons beers, even all these years after the takeover. (WhatPub says this is a quiet pub, and certainly there was no background music; but my note made at the time said they have live sports on TV.)

Well positioned Appleby pub in the market square which was quite full on my Friday visit with 4 handpumps on the bar, although only 2 functional.
