Wow! what a classic this is! Hanging impressively over the village this is a hidden eccentric gem of the kind you so rarely find these days. I have walked past it many times expecting it to be a posh country hotel but it’s really just an ultra traditional pub serving excellent beer.
You walk into a very musty room which feels like the reception of a national trust property though the staircase is gated off. From here you enter the main
pub with the second room containing the bar. Four real ales and three ciders served up by two proper matrons behind the bar. Card only and bar snacks available. Wacky vintage decor that makes no sense with none of the rooms blending into each other in any logical way. It was busy when I was in with a lot of pensioners whiling the afternoon away. This is the kind of eccentric gem to cherish while they are still around.

Popped in here out of curiosity after walking across Morecambe Bay (which this pub on a steep hill overlooks) as it was listed in the 2010 GBG. Converted from a large country house, it’s a huge building with a number of interior rooms. The bar area was had a large fire and TV though was nothing special décor-wise. Four ales were available – all of which I’d never heard of and two of them were badly kept, one was vinegar and the other was damp cardboard. Trying to get them exchanged was a bit of a song and dance.
I was really disappointed with this one, expected much better.
