A really friendly, welcoming local, still much as described by Roger, below. There are now 3 pool tables squeezed into the end, plus several TV screens showing live sports. The young barman was a bit on the back foot, but he got there in the end. Two ales on, Whitstable Bay and Masterbrew. The former was off, but the latter was OK. Biscuits and water were provided for the dog. I liked it here and would happily return.

This is apparently Kent’s (and possibly England’s) first purpose built Ale house, dating from 1830. This cottage style corner pub was originally 3 rooms but these have now been knocked through to make 1 elongated narrow pub that would probably make a good bowling alley. There are areas that are embarrassingly narrow and you may need to squeeze past a few people to get around the bar area but fortunately, the loacals are are a chatty and welcoming lot.
The décor is fairly plain and basic with some nice old etched windows including one still depicting the bottle and jug area, a precursor to today’s off licence. Note also the wooden ceiling with several inlaid coins. Plenty of dimpled pint pots, decorative mirrors and a nice brick fireplace give the place a good homely local feel.
The beers come from a rather truncated Shepherd Neame range – just 2 hand pumps and I have never seen anything other Master Brew available although the quality is always very good.
To the rear is an extended part of the building containing a (cheap) pool table and dart board and a few trophy laden shelves. It’s not really a pub to specifically go out of the way for if you are looking for any lengthy session but if you like good honest, down to earth pub’s, you can’t really go wrong here.
