What a beautiful day for the beer garden! We've got sharing platters and much more on our Summer menu, plus St.Aust… https://t.co/Jr45eBF7yJ

We were disappointed to find this pub closed for the first couple of weeks of 2025. The lights were on outside, but inside was in darkness. Hopefully, I will get the chance to give it a try some other day.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Phoenix Tavern
One of the town's non-Shepherd Neame pubs, this historic tavern has been given a thorough, semi-modern makeover but thankfully retains some character because it hasn't been fully opened out. The main bar area by the entrance is about 50% set aside for those eating, and a separate dining room can be found off to the left. However, another (smaller) seating area can be found behind the massive fireplace (which was in use on my visit). With three of the four handpumps in use, I found London Pride, Hop Head and Harvey's (£4.25) being poured.

E TA left this review about The Phoenix Tavern
A very appealing town centre pub with a focus on real ale, notable for NOT being a Shepherd and Neame house, which reopened in 2009. The ground floor of this Victorian house has been knocked through to form a J-shaped bar with wooden floors, an inglenook, beamed ceilings and wood-panelled walls. The staff were very pleasant, the locals were friendly and a convivial atmosphere prevailed. Home cooked food made from local ingredients is on offer. They run an annual beer festival both in the pub and on the nearby town quay. Five ales on; I had a pint of Otter which was excellent. This is a pub well worth visiting at any time and I shall make an effort to come to their beer festivals in future.
