A lovely old stone built pub, reputedly the oldest in Melton Mowbray. Inside doesn’t disappoint either with quarry tile and flag floors, a tough of rough exposed stone and beams aplenty. The beams in the bar are hung with pewter mugs. Decor is naturally Tudor in style with portraits of Anne and Henry VIII. Roughly divided into three or four areas, there’s a snug at each end, one being a separate room. Between them is the bar area with a residual wall 3/4 of the way along the counter but dividing this room in half. Five hand pumps with four Everards beers plus one from the Brew61 micro, usuals on three Low T-bars and three from Everards on a fourth. There’s also a Heinekin Zero mekon. Toilets upstairs. Rightly in the Good Beer Guide IMHO.

As noted below, this C.14 building was given to Anne of Cleeves as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII. It certainly looks the part and it's quite nice inside with a wood and glass room divider and some classic beams. Unfortunately it's really food oriented and it was close to impossible to find a spare seat; the substantial walled rear garden was a better bet. Four Everards on, three stagers plus a limited edition ale in Carnival which was in good shape (NBSS 3.5) and the place is GBG listed. A place to absolutely check out if you've not done the town before but I suspect I'd likely swerve it next time unless I was planning on eating. 6.5

A second attempt to visit this historic pub was thwarted yet again. The pub was closed to the general public on my Saturday afternoon visit, instead hosting what looked to be a wake. Peering through the windows, we could see lots of people dressed up mostly drinking wine, with a picture of somebody on a table. On checking their Facebook page, sure enough they had advised everybody that the pub would be closed on this day. Hopefully I will get to visit it one day and it will be third time lucky.

Still closed following lockdown and believed to be in search of new owners.
