Having drunk in a previous pub the NVB White Hart beer celebrating 20 years of this pub's existence, it would have been churlish not to do so again once I made it here. It was Very Good (again) and £6.00/pint, which is a bit less than I was charged at Paten & Co an hour earlier, but still quite steep. (Of course, halves may be charged at premium prices, but I never ask and simply double the price unless I see it displayed.) I liked it here, and was lucky enough to share a table (it was a busy Saturday afternoon, forcing me to be sociable) with two locals of a similar age to myself. They recommended two pubs I hadn't been to, the Lord Burghley around the corner, and the Copper Room on the way to the station. When I asked them to choose just one they plumped for the latter, which suited my inclination to get nearer to the transport hub towards the end of a crawl. Not that this was a crawl, of course, it's a pub research trip. This is another good Good Beer Guide pub, and is up there with the Green Man for my pub of the day.

Very busy, maybe too busy to really enjoy. Many rooms, though they can ditch the yucky green paint. Went for an Oakham/Hook Norton Collab which was par (NBSS 3). Nice enough overall, I’d like to try this at a quieter time, I suspect I would get a bit more value out of it. Don’t be fooled by the olde worlde interior, it isn’t a pub of age as was converted in 2005, earning an 'outstanding conversion or restoration' award from the CAMRAs as a result.

What a great pub this is. A building of some history mainly dating back to the 1600’s but with parts, most notably the beams in the Blind arch room on the third floor, dating as far back as the 13th century, which has had many uses over it’s history but did not become a pub until 2005.
The ground floor is a collection of five rooms off the main corridor, one housing the bar, and then a long thin courtyard garden area out back. The second floor has an additional two rooms before the staircase continues up to the top most room in the eves of the building. Each room has an eclectic collection of different items, chamber pots in one, pub memorabilia in another, stuffed animal heads in another for example.
The bar room just houses the bar and a single table, then the main seating areas radiate from either side off of this. Five hand pumps with a good selection of ales with Oakham Citra and Roosters Baby faced assassin as permanent ales. For our visit these were complemented by TT Landlord, Nene Valley Release the Chimps and Oakham Crush.
An absolutely fabulous pub and a rare 10 from me as well.
