This seems a lot less posh and forbidding than I remember from my last visit, which must have been before I started writing pub reviews and therefore probably more than 15 years ago. The bar has several tables, a settle and a few regular chairs as well as bar stools. There are five hand pumps with four Barngates beers at the time of my visit (see photos). The Brathay Gold was pretty good (NBSS 3.5) but the Goodhews Stout was not as good as I've had at other pubs in the Lake District. £5.50/pint is not hugely expensive for this area now, and it's good to be here for the view, if nothing else.

Rural pub/restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere, that is home to the Barngates Brewery.
The bar area is nicely appointed with plenty of hops on the ceiling. There is a separate dining area off to the left. A few locals were sat at the bar, whilst diners were also having a pre-meal drink in the bar area. A dog was barking at every single person entering, apart from myself.
The 4 Barngates ales on offer were Cat Nap, Goodhew's Dry Stout, Cracker & Brathay Gold. My stout was enjoyable.

The beers from the on-site brewery are superb without doubt, but apart from that it is a poncey restaurant with prices to match. Very disappointing, unless that is what you are looking for.
