I've been coming here regularly about twice a year on average. Today I cycled from Hawkshead and then on to Ambleside, stopping in Grasmere to wait for Tweedies to open at noon. It was worth the wait. The beers I didn't drink were Fell Tinderbox 6.3% and Orkney Dark Island 4.6%, but only because they're too strong when I'm cycling. I went for three halves: Fell Crag, a 3.8% bitter, Coniston Old Man Ale, a 4.2% dark brown or red ale, and Lakes Brew Pale 3.4%, a total of £8.65. I'd had the first two the day before in at other pubs in less than good condition and I wanted to remind myself what they were meant to taste like: they were just as they should be, perhaps not Excellent but certainly Very Good. As was the Lakes Brew, probably the best beer I've drunk at the newly popular strength of 4.3%, and once again VG. I made plans to ditch my bike in Ambleside and come back on the bus for the other two, but reluctantly decided against. Definitely another time, though.

Favourite in Grasmere - got everything. Great food, beer, entertainment at weekends, the odd wedding, beer garden.

On this visit, it was a wonderful Coniston Old Man Ale at £3.70. Average for these parts.

There is a Camra members discount of 5% on real ales. I only found this out by picking up a copy of the local newsletter, Lakes and Ale - the discount is not advertised anywhere in the pub. When challenged, the bar manager said "we don't shout about it". I came back, "at only 5% you've nothing much to shout about", and we left it at that. There's always a good variety of well-kept beers on here, in my experience, and that should be enough to attract the real ale crowd.
