The Head of Steam is a large pub with carpeted seating either side of the entrance that leads to a large bar area with a large island counter slap bang in the middle. Booths run opposite the counter up the right-hand wall and long tables are found opposite the counter under the left-hand windows, this is the only area of the pub that gets any natural light. There’s more seating at the far end of the bar and in the rear is some raised seating alongside a games area with two small pool tables, shuffleboard and some televisions connected to a games console. There were a few other customers during my recent bank holiday Monday early evening visit, but it felt very quiet due to the size of the place. In amongst the craft keg fonts I counted ten hand pumps and a large screen listing the available beers helpfully informed me that eight were in operation drawing Mobberley Brew House’s Best, Black Lodge Brewing’s Outside the Frame, Neptune’s Waterfront, Camerons Brewery’s Motorhead Road Crew and four options from Brass Castle, Morph, Pacer, Peach Blonde and Bad Kitty. I thought it was ok in here and found the service to be polite so I’d pop back in if passing, however the inclusion of a photobooth raises suspicions that this wouldn’t be somewhere I’d enjoy at the weekend.

As usual it’s difficult to better PSM’s description, I used walk past here when it was Abbey and whatever it was before that. I have a certain regard for Heads of Steam as the Leeds ones aren’t bad, sadly this one isn’t in the same category. 10 pulls with only a Lillies cider, a dreadful Cameron’s Roadcrew (warm, flat and stale) and two other possibly more promising beers, Lenten Lane Caramel Twist and Stout, Fatheads Fatlander, and one from Abbeydale called Daily Bread a no doubt dreary bitter.

Disappointing visit, with disinterested staff who offered no help to choose a drink from their extensive menu. Still, it was easy enough to do a full circuit of the central island bar to look at all options available.
Chain pub, with a chainy feel - could have been in any City in the world and Liverpool has so much to offer.
Got the GBG 2024 tick. Much better available.
