Old Boots left this review about The Dormouse
A pub of two halves, an older looking part to the left, Flemish bond brickwork rather than modern stretcher bond, and a more modern looking rendered extension in an old style on the left, both are more recent than they appear. The hospital next door was once the North Riding lunatic asylum by the way. The extension is more of a dining area while the other part is more pub like. The seating here is mostly tables and chairs although there’s a long banquette opposite the counter under the front windows. The dogleg counter has three pulls on the shorter length facing the front door, a “West Country” selection of Doombar and Proper Job (VG) and Landlord with the clip reversed. Nine solos have a range of nothing interesting, Madri on a couple being a local beer, obviously Guinness and surprisingly your non-latin lagers. New flag floors with a touch of parquet, plain dark walls and old and new beams. Tasteful decor of old animal pictures in the main, a few old Punch type caricatures, a nice print of York Minster but I didn’t spot a dormouse. There’s a large outdoor area and if you park a car here you need to sign in on one of the screens. A much better place than I expected.

Large Vintage Inn establishment in own grounds, with usual decor of beams and brickwork through sprawling collection of rooms. Heavy food trade but keeps several good ales on as well as a guest. More importantly had a feeling of being very well run. Outside, there is a large outdoor decking area at the front, facing an old orchard. There is a Premier Inn adjacent. Pleasant enough.
