An absolute gem of a heritage pub situated in the Holgate suburb,a classic Victorian central corridor interior and owned by Ossett who showcase their fabulous ale here. There is a modest snug to the immediate right of the entrance called the Sprinter Room but the bar here has the full range of handpumps, besides a long bench seats and a decent fireplace with an Ossett mirror above. The bar front is beautifully carved wood, the bar back impressive. The servery also has a corridor counter while a rear side snug also has a small counter,so there are different options for purchasing your ale.
The room to the left of the entrance is the largest ,has some great banquettes ,another heritage feature.Further down the corridor is the side snug with two halves, then a back snug to the left before right at the end of the corridor is an area called the Robin Room which seemed to be the gathering place for families with babies or very small children,a great idea to keep the rest of the pub with a feeling of comfortable refuge from life's cares.
On my visit the Ossett ale line up was their Butterley,Excelsius,Silver King (NBSS 4.5),White Rat,Blonde,Trip Hop #1 and Barghest Stout with the sister brewery Riverhead supplying their Winter Stout.Great line up.
Although in a suburb,if you come out of the lesser used western station exit at York and follow a footbridge over some railway lines you can get here on foot in 12 minutes. It's a journey you really must make,I don't offer give full marks but this is an outstanding pub that you really must visit.

An excellent and nicely-restored multi-roomed pub with lots of good glass- and woodwork. Nice features include a serving hatch for the back rooms (see the beer list on the stairs), while decorations include a Dick Turpin-themed room and a collection of railwayana marking the connections with the railway works behind. The large tabled garden includes a burger van for food. A whole string of Ossett beers can be relied on, on this occasion including a couple of stouts and one from their subsidiary Rat. Well worth the trip out from town (bus stop adjacent if you can't be bothered to walk).

My first heritage pub of the day on a brief visit to York, and despite the early hour (4:30 in the afternoon) it was fairly busy, which is good. The main room, at the front on the right, was fairly crowded and I couldn't get a particularly good look at what was on, though there's also a blackboard on the wall to the left of the counter (five Ossett beers and two guests, of which one was Tetleys Bitter and the other something from Brew York). Actually, as it's an Ossett pub all I was really looking for was Silver King, whose pump clip was initially hidden by someone's shoulder. I took my pint (NBSS 4) and tried to find a room where the rather loud background music was less unignorable than everywhere else, and succeeded to an extent in a small side room towards the rear. This is a lovely pub and it's good to see it so well used by local people.
