Located inches within the Leicestershire county boundary and, as the name suggests, near the wharf of the Welford arm of the GU canal which is at the rear of the building. The building looks interesting, like a turreted folly of some sort. ‘Round the back’ entry, down a corridor to get the oval bar. Interior is not much to write home about but the garden was nice. A GBG perennial, there were six cask on, my Langton Harborough IPA was decent but the glass only for fit the skip (NBSS 3.5) with further scoops of NVB Manhattan (4) and Abbeydale (3.5) following. Friendly service. Maybe there could be a bit of extra heft to get things up a mark towards a 9, but for now it is a worthy 8.

An interesting early nineteenth-century building with splendid (and hopefully unused) fortifications added later. Inside it is all traditional, with a small lower room out of use when we visited, and a larger bar up a couple of stairs, then a canteeny dining room further on. Best bit is the lovely garden outside by the river which I guess feeds the canal basin a few yards away.
It's in the GBG and very much into real ale, with a changing selection of mainly local brews: the Pheasantry PA we sampled was top notch.
Well worth seeking out.

Enjoyed Gundog Jack Spaniels and Titanic Plum Porter in this popular bar which we visited while on a CAMRA trip in the area. Different drinking and eating areas inside, and will be popular with walkers .
