An interesting early nineteenth-century building with splendid (and hopefully unused) fortifications added later. Inside it is all traditional, with a small lower room out of use when we visited, and a larger bar up a couple of stairs, then a canteeny dining room further on. Best bit is the lovely garden outside by the river which I guess feeds the canal basin a few yards away.
It's in the GBG and very much into real ale, with a changing selection of mainly local brews: the Pheasantry PA we sampled was top notch.
Well worth seeking out.

Enjoyed Gundog Jack Spaniels and Titanic Plum Porter in this popular bar which we visited while on a CAMRA trip in the area. Different drinking and eating areas inside, and will be popular with walkers .

The Wharf is a GBG pub, with garden area, situated at the end of the Welford Arm. This was opened in 1814 and as the pub was formerly called the George Inn, it would suggest a compatible date. The Arm fed the limekilns that once stood behind the pub. The pub itself is part of a long row of buildings, but the frontage of the pub has been rendered in white and given a crenelated look, with a projecting full-hight porch. The interior has a couple of rooms, but the small 'Canal Room' was closed and seemed to be filled with stuff. The main room is part-partitioned by a fireplace feature. The back part is the dining area, with the front part acting as the bar/lounge. We didn't eat so cant comment on that. There was no TV and there was no music. The decor was cream and undressed brick. The walls had varios pictures and they do have music nights (Jazz was the one advertised). The service was fine and the clientele seemed to be local - although boats were at the wharf. Beer; usual stuff with five handpuls that included: Pedigree, St Austell's Proper Job, Newby Wyke Red Squirrel and a class Potbelly Beijing Black. A great pub and definitely one to visit - would love to return
