This pub has now been taken over by Marston's. Parts of this building, namely the vaults, apparently date back to the 13th century; the pub itself is dated to 1630 and is a fine commanding jettied building standing sentinel over Oxford's High Street.
A first in here the other night and there are certainly one or two items that hint of age - I'm reliably informed that some of the tiles to an upstairs fireplace surround are Tudor. The place was however modernised in 1968 when conservation wasn't as high up the agenda as it is today. Essentially it's a four-room pub with one or two seemingly turned over for dining, food being burgers, fish 'n' chips and the like. These rooms are full-height wood panelled, the other rooms being panelled to around waist height; the colour scheme is taupe/mushroom. The floor is part patterned carpet, part bare boarded; in all, a bit dated in a 'Ye Olde' way, an emollient for tourists who make up the bulk of customers. Furniture is conventional, along with some high tables and stools in the traditional fashion and some pews to the walls. Muted music played and an ugly games machine flashed in the corner.
Ales: Hobgoblin, Marston's Pedigree Amber Ale and Marston's 61 Deep at £1.75 a half - very cheap for the area - and not too bad.
I doubt I'll come here again, but I wish the tourists all the best.

Large, multi area'd ‘bit-of-everything’ place in an aged building but little of note in the shades-of-brown interior. Three ales (Black Sheep, Hobgoblin and a decent drop of Jennings Gold Digger). Grumpy service from the miserable European barmaid. Cocktail menu on a blackboard by the bar. Heavily food-led. Quizzer screwed us over. Much better elsewhere in central Oxford.
