Recently re-opened under new management, it’s still finding its feet and has a way to go yet before it returns to its former glory – it’s not yet at the standard reported below. The carpark is shabby, the décor unkempt. The small drinkers’ bar feels uncomfortable, while the remaining bar area to the left lacks atmosphere. There was no real ale on when we visited – apparently it had run out some days earlier and they “hadn’t got a new order yet”. We settled for bottled Butcombe though this was ridiculously expensive. Food appears to be mainly pizzas, which wasn’t terribly appealing. The landlord was friendly enough, though we didn’t appear to be his target demographic. Dogs were welcomed, and there was a barrel of water for them, which they probably enjoyed more than we did our warm bottled Butcombe. I don’t think we’ll be rushing back until and unless it regains its earlier charm.

A traditional old pub in this small village on the outskirts of Wells, this has fortunately bucked the trend in that it was converted to an Indian restaurant a few years ago, but it now back to being a proper pub with no sign that it was ever anything else. It was fairly quiet on a recent Saturday lunchtime visit, with just a few locals propping up the bar.
The drinker’s bar is to the right and this has quite a cosy ambience with old flagstones on the floor and a couple of hefty black beams on the ceiling. Wood panelling covers the lower part of the walls and there is a stone fire-place with a small wood burning stove. There was a plasma stuck up on the wall showing the football, but fortunately the volume was low and this was not too intrusive. A restaurant area is to the left which also looked to be quite cosy with exposed stone walls and a few pictures dotted around.
Beers on tap were Thwaites Wainright, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Butcombe. Ciders were Old Rosie and Thatcher’s Gold. All in all, this seems a decent village pub and the residents of Wookey are lucky to have this and two others to choose from.
