This 19th Century roadside pub was once a cider house, and before that a farmhouse. It is set in it own roadside location within easy reach of the A38. There is a scruffy car park leading to a very ordinary garden with basic furniture and a children’s play area at the bottom. There is also a skittle alley in a separate building. The garden is primarily used by smokers and young families as it is not that attractive, doesn’t have much of a view and there is a lot of traffic noise. Inside, it’s mainly set up for diners. There is a single open-plan room, though it’s partially sub-divided into various areas to give a more intimate feel. The staff took a very long time to serve us as they were more concerned with fussing over elderly, infirm diners than serving casual drinkers, and when they did get to us, it was fairly joyless. Food was ordinary pub grub, overpriced. They host an annual beer festival, plus regular music acts and quiz nights. Ales on were Doombar and Exmoor Fox, both in OK condition. It’s fine to stop for a pint or two if passing, but unless you’re playing skittles or coming for an event, not really a venue of choice.
