The Bridge Barn was probably once a sedate little canalside pub but is now an expanded bustling Beefeater pub/restaurant. On the face of it, the place has plenty going in its favour, an attractive building situated in a picturesque location but from a drinking perspective it doesn’t really fulfill its potential.
The interior isn’t as big as you first expect, basically a low ceilinged L-shape that has been divided by a few remnants of internal walls and pillars. There is also a small side room tucked away in one corner. There are low ceilings and plenty of exposed timbers although much of it seems to be the result of brewery refurbishment rather than original. Stairs lead to the large main restaurant section on the first floor although the main bar is also geared for diners with menus lining each table. There was some background piped music but I didn’t spot any TVs.
There is not a great choice of beers with just 2 ales – Spitfire & London Pride, the latter at £3.20 was reasonably priced for the area and decent enough quality. Food is the usual Beefeater selection with main courses around £8-£15. It can get very busy and service isn’t the quickest at the best of times. Being addressed as Sir all the time also makes it all a bit too formal (this is hardly the Ritz!). I have been here twice and the customer base has consisted mainly of group diners and overnighters lodging at the Premier Inn next door who just head for the nearest target.
When the weather allows the gardens overlooking the canal could be quite pleasant although I suspect it gets packed with families (and kids in tow). It is a pleasant enough spot and certainly has its place but it lacks that quintessential pubby atmosphere to warrant more than a passing pint.

I must admit that I was a little disappointed to find myself standing outside a Beefeater Grill in a Premier Inn complex after such a lengthy walk from Woking Train Station. From the outside the actual building is very attractive and there are picnic tables on the front lawn. Some of these a covered by a jumbrella and there is also a children’s climbing frame with slide. Inside there are two floors that have a rustic feel with very low beams in places that had me ducking my head. There seemed to be a table crammed in wherever possible and the pub was full of families dining at 19:00 on Friday evening. The bar is stocked with standard draught products and the two hand pumps were drawing Pride and Spitfire. Being a beefeater the pub speciality is flame grilled meat which is at a reasonable price around the £11 mark for two courses and there are some meal promotions at certain times of the day.
Although attractive I didn’t find this pub to be the most comfortable place. Maybe it is better in the summer months when one can sit outside by the canal and escape the smell of burning cow.

A good pub, slightly gastro style of pub but with an old fashioned feel as well. Many beers on tap including Spitfire. Worth the walk from Woking station.
