Real Ale Ray left this review about Chaplins
This pub starts out looking modest in size and then extends further towards the rear. The pub was very busy on our Thursday evening visit due to the pub quiz. The manager told us that the pub was busy every night.
Five ales on handpump, Titanic Plum Porter, Rudgate Battle Axe, Thornbridge Brother Rabbit, Darwin Rolling Hitch and Darwin Happy Chappy which is their house beer. The cask ales were in good shape and the prices excellent.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about Chaplins
Chaplins enjoys a prominent position at the apex of a couple of roads, but doesn't look too promising from the outside. It looks a bit like a dodgy Irish pub where Guinness would be the highlight. However, I'd noticed it in the latest Good Beer Guide and was ready to give it a try on my Wednesday afternoon in Sunderland town centre.
Inside is quite a traditional interior featuring lots of wood and plenty of seating. The two barmaids seemed a bit on the grumpy side, except when conversing with regulars they obviously knew. But the beer range was good. Darwin Happy Chappy is the house beer. Guests were Pennine A Good Try, Robinson's Hop and Under & Trooper, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted & Tiny Rebel Cwtch. I chose the cider, which was SeaCider White Peach. I read that there is a discount for CAMRA card holders. But it certainly wasn't offered and I didn't see it being promoted anywhere.
I'd imagine this pub gets very lively at times, with a few characters setting foot inside. The rugby themed beers on also point to the pub's focus on sports. Again, I'd imagine that it would get very busy when live sporting events are shown on the TVs.

Enjoyed our visit to this 2019 Good Beer Guide bar in July. We chose Wadworth Swordfish from the ales available.
