Just my luck to be on some powerful antibiotics on my visit to Warwick. The Black Pub had a choice of zero alcohol beers, and I went for Beavertown Lazer Crush, which was at least a better beer than their Neck Oil, though at £4.20 for a 33cl can it was a tad dearer.
The Black Pug has a traditional black and white exterior but once inside the colour scheme is a less attractive grey. I spotted three hand pumps on the bar, with only one featuring a pump clip: Bass. (But a hand-written Old Golden Hen card was propped up next to the Bass.) Not sure if Warwick will feature on my itinerary again, and this one is less enticing than the Wild Boar near the station, so we'll call it a maybe.

The Black Pug has some seating out the front under a couple of jumbrellas and there’s a beer garden out back with some covered seating that leads to a grass covered area with picnic tables. To the right of the entrance is a snug with large table and the main bar area is found to the left where the bar counter supports premium and craft keg alongside Carling and a couple of hand pumps that were drawing Fuller’s London Pride and Butcombe’s Haka New Zealand Pale. My recent Sunday early evening visit wasn’t long after the World Cup Rugby had finished, in fact muted Poirot had just started on all the televisions throughout, that was until one of the bar staff noticed before turning them off and turning the music up. 90% of the tables had reserved signs on them for earlier in the afternoon so this seems to be a popular Sunday lunch venue. However, it’s not such a popular Sunday evening venue judging by the lack of customers.

When somewhere has menu prices like 11½ instead of £11.50 you know it's up itself. When it names itself after a particularly repellent breed of dog you know the case is terminal. The Millwright used to be OK, nothing special but traditional enough to have a bit of atmosphere. The recent refurbishment has produced a cold (heating off in January?), dark, dank main bar with tatty furniture, tin chairs, the inevitable posing tables and tragic pastel grey paint on every paintable surface. To be fair, the rooms to the side and rear remain similar to before and, if they were heated, would retain some comfort. Perhaps the money ran out.
Anyway, the Home Ales Robin Hood wasn't too bad and served with a smile, and there's plenty of outdoor seating front and back. Given a nice day, all is not lost.
