Good sized pub in the centre of the village. The car park's a bit small though, and it's very difficult to walk to. It's got a nice feel to it with several different areas on different levels – a front bar with a flag stone floor, a smaller cosier bar and a long bar across the top with a darts board and a fruit machine. Lots of interesting old pictures on the wall and a suitably country pub feel to the place. There's a small beer garden out the back as well.
On the downside, it seems to attract white van man and his mates. I go past twice a day and the car park's invariably full of vans, and a few smoker's congregating outside. Consequently it was quite noisy on a recent Friday evening visit. Not somewhere to pop in for a quiet relaxing pint with the wife. That said, maybe that's the after work crowd, it may be quite different later on. There were quite a few kids running round as well.
Food's only served on a lunch time I believe, and although I've not eaten in here for a while it was always good value, basic, pub grub. Think ham, egg & chips, omelette, etc. There was a very animated dice game going on across the bar, and confusingly one of the players stood behind the bar. Barman seemed friendly enough.
Wadworth's beers dominated, with their 6X, Henry's IPA, St. George and the Dragon and JCB. There was also Butcombe. Four of these beers were served straight from barrels racked behind the bar. Ciders were Thatcher's Gold, Stowford Press and Weston's Old Rosie.
