Good sized, attractive pub right in the centre of the village. There's a couple of bar areas at the front, and a rear area more geared up for dining. It's got quite a country pub feel to it, with low ceilings, a part flagstone floor and a fire separating the two front bars.
It's a popular spot, and can get very busy out the front in sunny weather. On previous visits (a year or more ago) I have found some of the clientele to be rather uncouth. It seems to attract a lot of people from Hartcliffe. However, on this occasion it was fine, and all the staff, particularly the landlady, were very friendly. Hopefully those issues are now behind them, although as my visit was on a Monday lunchtime, it was inevitably attracting a different clientele to that which you might get on a Saturday afternoon. Nonetheless, it seemed to be doing a good trade which is encouraging at a time when you might expect a country pub to be rather quiet. There's a beer garden both at the front for watching the world go by, and another round the side.
The food is typical “pub grub”, e.g.; ham, egg & chips, lasagne, curry, etc. We found the food quite decent, although nothing spectacular, and it was perhaps a tad on the expensive side. But then, this is a well healed area.
Beers on this occasion were Butcombe, Courage Best, Bass & Doom Bar with two of these being served straight from barrels racked up behind the bar. Ciders were Stowford Press and Thatcher's Gold.
