I thought I'd arrived in hell when I entered to find a fairly drunk and defiantly (no, I don't mean definitely) tone deaf man singing American Pie, not only my least favourite song of all time, but one of the longest. Things changed for the better when I spotted Old Peculier among the hand pumps (along with its half-sister Theakston XB, plus local Stewart Pentland IPA. I'd have been happy with a fairly rough OP at just £2.90 for a pint (I had a half), but this was NBSS 3.5. The barman gave my a grin when I suggested taking the singer out and shooting him; his colleague greeted my like a long lost brother when he heard my southern accent: his was a lot further south (maybe Melbourne) but anyone south of Hadrian's Wall was a friend from home to him.
This pub is named after the last film shown here when it was a cinema - The Trouble with Angels in 1966. I was here at just after 8pm, but I reckon most of the customers had been here since early afternoon. At the price they're selling beer here I could drink until I fall over, and still spend less than a normal day in my local pubs.

A subterranean JDW with little exterior fanfare, housed in a grotty and run-down building that is also home to other businesses; what with the roadworks going on outside I almost walked past it. Beyond a tongue and groove vaulted wood ceiling there's little of note, one small sunken side area provides some natural light but otherwise it's a fairly gloomy Spoons-by-numbers. However the plus points were a decent pizza, friendly staff and three genuine guest ales - indeed my Stewarts 80\- was in good nick (NBSS 3.5) so no faults on the technical side of things. 5.5
