Whilst this is an indistinct Spoons in many ways, it is easily the pick of two remaining in LE1. Usually codgers and quieter students in situ along with hi-vizzers and cheapskate ale drinkers (hi!). Has plenty of guest ales, often in great shape. Of the six I’ve had since moving up here, none have been less than an NBSS 3.5. Doesn’t feature in the current GBG – maybe that will change shortly? I think it should. 7.5

Despite the fairly attractive exterior with nice mouldings, this is a mid-size JDW with their classic mid-90’s open-plan faux-Victoriana interior just like a hundred others, lacking charisma. It has an L-shaped interior with an unusual external covered patio. There was a good array of local and guest ales and my Nottingham was in good shape. Given what else LE1 has to offer I can hardly ring a huge endorsement here but at least it’s not the Last Plantagenet. Rated 6

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The High Cross (JD Wetherspoon)

Quite an imposing building at the western end of the High Street, but not as large as one might expect inside. Quite dark furniture and decoration, but the high ceiling and tall windows help. Also has a small patio seating area to one side. Rev James, Oakham's Three in a Row (£1.99), Charrington IPA from Heritage Brewing and Falstaff Phoenix available from the two banks of six handpumps in addition to the usual Ruddles, Doom Bar and Abbot.

The High Cross is a Wetherspoons that was rammed during a recent Wednesday evening visit. The interior is L-shaped with a raised seating are to the left of the entrance and a bar counter along the left-hand wall. This faces a line of high tables that run down the centre of the pub and standard tables and chairs that run under the windows of the right-hand wall. In the right rear of the pub is a sunken seating area and in the left rear is open plan seating. It was very busy in here during a recent Wednesday evening visit, well the bar area was, the rear area not so much. Thankfully the good people of Leicester don’t seem to be bar hoggers so I was able to note that the two banks of six hand pumps were drawing Charrington IPA, Cairngorm Wildcat, Brains St David’s Ale, Sharp’s Doom Bar, GK Abbot Ale, Ruddles and Grainstore’s Rutland Osprey. Standard keg was also available alongside San Miguel. The service was polite and I thought this was a decent Spoons.
