Located in a former chapel on the periphery of the town centre, this is an unusual looking pub and still looks very much as it must have done in it’s former life, with quite discrete pub signage on the exterior.

Internally too it retains much of it’s original character, and Wetherspoon’s have certainly done a good job on the conversion with the pulpit at one end and arched stained glass windows either side. It’s all one open plan room internally although split across two floors, with the upper floor being more of a balcony around the permitter, thus the central space is an impressive full height. Dark wooden boards are on the floor as well as cladding the balcony whilst the paintwork was a very pale yellow. A single storey room at the rear is perhaps an extension, although this had glass panels in the roof to let in plenty of light. This was a little more elegant, with sculptured wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and patterned carpet on the floor. Adjacent to this was a courtyard garden.

Beers on tap were Greene King IPA, Doom Bar, Abbott Ale, Salcombe Island Street Porter, Branscombe Golden Fiddle, Jaipur IPA and South Hams Hopnosis. Ciders meanwhile were a quintet from Thatcher’s with their Apple & Blackcurrant, Cloudy Lemon, Blood Orange, Haze and Gold along with Strongbow Dark Fruit, Flattler Strawberry & Lime, Sandford Orchard’s Debon Red and Stan’s Cheddar Valley. Overall, whilst I’m not an especially big fan of ‘Spoons, both this and The Imperial are worth a visit.

Housed in an old Chapel, George’s Meeting House is a Wetherspoons that has kept some of the buildings previous fixtures including balcony seating to the left and right and the pulpit at the rear with authentic stained glass chapel windows either side. The serving counter up the left supports two banks of five hand pumps that were drawing Maxim Brewery’s Samson, Portobello Brewing’s Spa, Jaipur and Elgood’s Patron Saint plus the usual three. The friendly barman was very informative about the pub’s history, but this was my last visit of the day so no idea what he said. This is an interesting Spoons that is worth a look.

Three of us were stood across the road wondering where this JDW actually was located. As there were no tables and chairs out front and no smokers loitering around the main door entrance. Once we spotted JD Wetherspoon under George's Meeting House we were ok. This Spoons outlet does have an impressive interior, worth a visit just for that. Ten handpumps with Doom Bar, GK IPA and Abbot doubled up. The guests were Dartmoor Jail Ale, Portobello Market Porter, Exeter Brewery 'fraid Not and Fall's Over. We went for the 'fraid Not at £2.74, which was in excellent condition.
