This was my first visit to this side street pub. Entrance is by what looks like an old coaching gate. It's fairly dark inside, with just the front windows providing any light. The bar itself was a little further back, with further seating beyond that.
Timothy Taylor Landlord is the regular ale. I opted for the guest beer, which was Rudgate Odin's Gold. There was also a selection of 4 ciders from Lilley's - Mango, Peach, Tropical & Darkcider. Craft beers were Hopical Storm & Neck Oil.
An 80's soundtrack was playing with one other customer in the main bar area who left soon after I arrived and a group of loud girls somewhere to the rear. They could be heard, but not seen.
I wasn't expecting much from this place, but with a guest beer and a few ciders, I was pleasantly surprised.

Not a bad little pub, if a bit dated and unfortunately with overly loud music. The initial impression is not great, being pointed in through a fire door rather than the proper entrance but once inside it is ok. A good selection of pump clips is on display over the bar but on this occasion there were just TT Knowle Spring and Golden Best on the pumps, admittedly in good nick. Fair enough but some room for improvement.

Taylors beers still prominent on the bar, they provided 3 of the 4 real ales, the Boltmaker was in pretty average condition though and the pub is mediocre. Boring generic decor and table service in operation due to the cramped interior. in other towns it would be alright but I couldn’t wait to get to York’s many more interesting pubs.
