Located in the middle of a cluster of three pubs, this Wetherspoon’s outlet looks quite traditional and even reasonably attractive from the outside, without the usual gold on blue branding and it also looks as though it might be quite small. Not your usual Wetherspoon’s at all, although once inside it extends a very long way back and opens out considerably, so it is a fairly typical large drinking barn after all. It was very busy on our recent Saturday evening visit with pretty much every table taken and plenty more people standing, although we did manage to grab a seat at an uncleared and rather dirty table.

Décor wise it’s not unlike many others, with dark wood panelling on much of the walls, many inlaid with large portraits and information on prominent local figures such as Dr Johnson. A couple of wooden booths opposite the bar counter was a potentially cosy spot, and these had shelves of books built in to the end. In the middle of the pub the roof opened up in to a second level which looked quite impressive, with some sort of galleried landing to the side and a large clock at one end. The carpet was well worn and had no discernible pattern left, resulting in a plain grey appearance.

Beers that I spotted on the bar included Abbot Ale, Black Hole Red Dwarf and Cosmic, Theakston’s Old Peculiar, Ruddles Best and Doom Bar, however on checking the app I noticed that they also had Super Nova and No Escape from Black Hole as well as Young Henry’s Newtowner. Ciders meanwhile were Strongbow, Strongbow Dark Fruit and Stowford Press. The barman seemed a bit clueless, on asking for the Old Peculiar he asked “is that an ale?”, and when I confirmed that it was, I still had to point it out to him on the bar. A G&T also came with no slice. Perhaps if I’d visited at a quieter time I might have felt more amenable towards it, but it was really far to busy and noisy to be enjoyable.

Smart Wetherspoons - very busy on a Saturday with a high volume of screaming kids. Was meeting a meetup group for a town pub crawl. But how to spot them? The half a dozen people drinking coffee took me by surprise :-) It was 11am but that is now way to start a pub crawl, is it!

I went for the £3.10 Jaipur, in perfect nick and even in a cermonial glass. Not sure what Thornbridge are up to. This is probably half the price I paid at their Colmore Tap on Thursday.

Absolutely packed when we called in. Can't recall what beers were on but I know the pint I had was decidedly average. Couldn't wait to drink it and move on. Much better options nearby.
