Many people seem to confuse this pub with the King's Lock at the other end of town. They are both similar in construction, in that they are stack pubs built over 2 levels. This one is called the Big Lock, as the lock on the canal it is adjacent to can hold 2 narrowboats at the same time. It was interesting to watch as two boats squeezed in to head up the canal.
This pub has a central tiled bar with seating all around. Cask ales were Ossett Yorkshire Blonde & Timothy Taylor Landlord. A third handpull was unclipped. The craft beer was Lagunitas Daytime IPA. Ciders were Orchard Thieves and Old Mout.
I chose to sit on a balcony at the rear overlooking the canal. A bunting featured flags of all the nations in the Euros had yet to be removed. At canal level, there is further outdoor seating next to the lock itself. Seating at the front of the pub was more popular on my visit though, as it was in sunlight. Quite a young crowd had gathered.
Sunday lunches were being served quite late in the day. Dogs are also made welcome. There is a car park to the side of the pub.

The outside has been repainted ,the interior is clean and there is now a clear focus on food in this pub. There are real ales available, but a dull selection including GK IPA ,Bomber and Adnams Bitter. The long dining area looks over the Big Lock from a first floor vantage, and this was the only bar area open at lunchtime, although I believe there is a ground floor bar leading to the canalside.Food reasonable and a respectable, friendly pub in a town sadly lacking decent pubs.
