The Woodrow Wilson is a large Wetherspoons with a serving counter up the right that supports two banks of seven hand pumps that were drawing the usual three plus Nethergate Brewery’s Hop Weaver, Hawkshead Brewery’s Five Hop, Moorhouses Blonde Witch, Exmoor’s Silver Stallion, Devil’s Bridge IPA, Wainwright Gold and two Snails Bank ciders. The seating consists of a raised seating area in the front left and sea of high tables that stretch across the front. A mix of seating runs from front to back, including booths up the left-hand wall. At the rear is a large open plan area that is overlooked by a large screen that was airing muted Racing TV. Much like the town’s Lloyds No. 1, I was surprised to see televisions in a Spoons, I suppose Tim didn’t want to mess with these northern outlanders… they likes what they likes!

A classic 90s Spoons with booths, bookcases and varnish trim. Neat inbuilt fireplace in the middle of the pub which sadly looked unused, maybe they couldn’t trust the locals not to abuse it. Of amusement value was a retained COVID-era Perspex screen set which was fashioned into a booth – maybe this feature will see its inclusion in the CAMRA National Inventory come 2040. Ground floor bogs, a pleasant rarity. A regular GBG lister and there were six guest cask, my Allendale Wolf was close to fag-end but still good (NBSS 3.5) served-up by friendly staff. I also dropped in for a bit of grub and a herbal high a couple of nights later to find a nice, genteel atmosphere. From a toper’s perspective this is the better Spoons of the two but both the JDWs have their merits and given Carlisle town centre is mostly shut midweek evenings (and doesn’t have much in the way of quality regardless), they’re default options. The unusual name is that Ma Wilson was born in Carlisle. 7.5

Brainy Pool left this review about The Woodrow Wilson (JD Wetherspoon)

Quite a pleasant Wetherspoons with cosy booths to sit in. Rapid, speed of light service, a lot of the old Wetherspoons issues are now redundant with most customers using the app. The food was pinged in record breaking time. All ales £2 a pint besides the sadly dull and bland Ruddles which is currently on at a ridiculous 99p. No wonder it was so busy.
