Nicely decorated with a splash of dark turquoise. Decent selection of guest cask and my Schiehallion was in good order (NBSS 3.5) with a bit of chat from the staff as well. The downside is that it’s a bit cramped inside – smaller floorspace than the exterior might suggest. Better than it was back in 2011, anyway. 6.5

November 2011
A 1999 JDW situated in a wonderfully facaded mock Tudor building, making it look a bit posher than usual (indeed, it has a ‘diner's only’ area!). The interior has a split-level layout and has recently been tastefully refurbished, I could smell the furniture showroom whiff quite clearly above the usual other inherent Spoons smells. Disappointingly, a large number of ales over the two banks of handpulls were ‘coming soon’, despite it being mid-afternoon. I also found the service rather slow and sloppy. My (eventual) pint of RCH Fiery Liz was fine though. File under ‘pop in and take a look’. Rated 5

Strongers . left this review about The Flying Standard (JD Wetherspoon)

The Flying Standard is a large Wetherspoons that is housed in an enormous mock Tudor building with lots of café seating out front. The interior is split-level with raised seating in the front right and sunken seating to the left. A curved serving counter that runs across the rear faces a sea of high tables, many of which were taken during a recent midweek late afternoon visit. Upstairs is a smaller split-level bar where a paved terrace can be accessed to the side. Standard and premium keg were available across the two bars with two banks of six hand pumps downstairs and a bank of three upstairs that were drawing the usual three suspects alongside Sharp’s Sea Fury, GK Old Speckled Hen and Byatt’s Brewery’s Dragon Pop IPA.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Flying Standard (JD Wetherspoon)

We arrived at this city centre branch of Wetherspoon's to find an ambulance outside and an area of the bar cleared for the paramedics to care for a guy who had seemingly collapsed.

Other than that, everybody was continuing along with their business as usual, with the typical Wetherspoon's clientele. The bar is long, with a couple of banks of handpulls. Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar were all on, as you would expect. Guests were Ringwood Old Thumper, Heritage Charrington IPA, Oakham Citra & Byatt's Ruby Rye IPA. The cider was Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon.

Whilst the ground floor is large and extends to a slightly raised area off to the right-hand side, the upstairs seating area was also very busy, with plenty of seating including an outdoor area.
