Run by Hydes, Alfreds is certainly more bar than pub with a floor to ceiling windowed frontage that sits behind awning covered café seating on decking that runs on the passing pavement for the full length of the building. Music piped outside to the decking becomes louder inside the open plan high ceilinged and wood floored rectangular interior. Tables with a mix of chairs and benches run across the front windows and a long banquette runs up the left-hand wall. High tables run across the centre from left to right and up the right-hand wall is another banquette that faces high tables. The bar counter found across the rear wall to the right was being run by a polite young barmaid. Premium keg and Beavertown’s Neck Oil were available alongside two hand pumps that were drawing Hydes 1863 and Don’t Panic. After ordering a pint of 1863 I did start to panic as I surveyed the ten or so older locals to find them all on lager, but my fears were unfounded as it was a decent pint. This probably isn’t somewhere I’d go out of my way to revisit, but as a bar it is above par.
