This is a rather old school Wetherspoons pub, which a board on the back wall says opened on 30th April 1997, located a couple of minutes up the road from Leytonstone tube station. Typical of its era, this pub has an open plan front seating area with a few pillars loosely breaking up the sightlines and lots of standard and high tables filling the gaps. Large front windows let a good amount of light in and the space seemed to be frequented by the more hardcore drinkers, with TV screens showing live Euro 2024 football. Further back is the bar area, with the servery to the left and slot machines in the standing room space opposite. A sculpture of a tree (walnut or otherwise) hugs one end of the bar, which has the usual polished stone counter top and mirrored bar back. To the right is a raised seating area, screened by the aforementioned row of slot machines, which offers some cosier seating options in an attractive space with a well stuffed book case on the back wall. Continue onwards for the large rear area, carpeted throughout and clad in old wood panels, with more bookcases, banquettes down one side and padded bench booths down the other, plus rows of regular tables and chairs through the centre. There are plenty of local history boards back here and a branch shaped frame, made by the same person who did the tree sculpture, holds a blackboard detailing how the pub got its name.
The bar had the three regular 'Spoons ales and four guest beers, with two more coming soon. I tried the Thwaites Wainwright's Gold at a very reasonable £2.41 a pint, and thought it was in great shape. The barmaid who served me was very friendly and had a laugh when we realised I'd inadvertantly ordered one of the 'coming soon' beers, which she'd then tried to pull.
I really warmed to this place, which I thought had aged a lot better than many of the chain's other mid-90's London pubs. The good beer and friendly service were big plus points too and I have to wonder how I've never managed to set foot in this place before on my numerous visits to this part of town - its firmly on the radar now and I'm sure I'll be back again before too long.

A classic mid 90s JDW interior (Co-Op conversion) with an affable clientele. Bit of a let-down at the bar as three (!) of the guest cask weren't actually on, leaving just two, a mildly longpour Evan Evans was my pick (NBSS 2). Heard a punter shout "HE'S MUTTON!" so 9/10 on the Cockneyometer. Could do better.

After nearly a year of not going to this particular JDW, I was persuaded to give it another chance. I Shouldn't have bothered. I was served with a pint of 'Abbot' which seemed to have cleaning fluid in it. I tried to change it for 49er but was told that was being cleaned, ditto with the DoomBar. I settled for 'Strongbow'. I was joined by a mate who settled for John Smith's which he said tasted like 'cleaning fluid'. I went back up to the bar and was told the 'Abbot' was now alright, it wasn't so I left the Walnut and went to The Drum at The Bakers Arms for a very decent couple of 'Abbots'. The next day I spoke to my 'John Smith's' mate and he said that other friends of ours who joined him after I left had also had similar problems with various pints. Probably just a really bad day but it will certainly be a very long time before I ever go back. The staff never seem to be 'there' either physically or mentally.
