A nicely-kept between-wars pub with great woodwork and parquet flooring. The walls are trimmed with the traditional sort of pub junk - sorry, decorations, with just a sports TV to bring in some modernity. It has quite a strong food trade, with both rooms laid up for Sunday lunch, but is still very welcoming for drinkers, and the riverside terrace at the back is still good on a sunny day. Cask ales on were TT Landlord, Black Sheep Best and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and condition was fine. A good solid pub in the old style.

Review below was in 2016, and we called in last month. Chose Westgate Mason's Blonde and Black Sheep Best Bitter which were fine. Pleasant sitting at a table outside overlooking the river Fosse.

Called in this pub which has reopened. They had 2 ales on from Cross Bay brewery, both of which were fine.

Two reasonable sized rooms as Oldboots says comfortably furnished,the beer selection seemed to be leaning toward the usual suspect end of the spectrum, I had a pint of the only one that was maybe not,Merrie City Atlantic Hop but this turned out to be no great shakes, we came here with the main purpose to eat though and from that point of view was quite decent but would probably rule this one out in any future visits to York.
