The Thompson Arms is a prominent pub on the edge of the Gay Village that was lit up like a Christmas Tree during a recent midweek evening visit before Christmas. Long armchairs run along the front windows up to a pool table in the front right corner. High tables surround the U-shaped serving counter mid-way along the right-hand wall, but most of this pub is standing room for the club nights. During my recent midweek evening visit the DJ booth was unmanned so the entertainment was some upbeat background music and two muted televisions, one of which was playing Bullseye from the 80s and the other a water fight between some scantily dressed young gym going men. This is a keg only venue with standard and premium keg being available alongside Neck Oil, so I went for half a Fosters which I drank under a ceiling covered in more glitter balls than I’ve ever seen. The walls are also painted with glitter, I imagine it gets a bit raucous in here at the weekend. This pub isn’t aimed at me so I’ll not be returning, but I will mention that the service from the barman was very friendly.
