Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Great Western (JD Wetherspoon)

Substantial and decent-looking former railway hotel, unfortunately transformed into a rather dull former Lloyds No 1 Bar. Various seating / dining areas - none with any residual character - arranged over two floors (although the upper part is a bit more inviting if you ascend whatever the square version of a spiral staircase is called, and there is also a compact enclosed terrace). All seven handpumps in operation downstairs on this visit (with further duplicated pumps at first-floor level), offering Ruddles, Doom Bar, Abbot and Jaipur plus the more local Brains SA, Thunderbird from Glamorgan and Rhymney Export (at £1.99, a remarkable 60p cheaper than the last pint I bought here in 2017).

This was built in 1879 as the Great Western Hotel, to service the adjacent railway station though now towered over by a complex of ultra-modern hotel blocks.
I had thought that this may have been the unnamed meet-up point for our breakaway Cardiff crawl, but as there were no crawlees in, I left, only to encounter them making their way up from the station.

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Great Western (JD Wetherspoon)

Nearest spoons to the Central Station ,there is a fine stone exterior and an interesting interior which winds around. The bar is straight ahead of the entrance,to the right is a raised small lounge.Going left takes you past a series of sections, each getting less hectic the further from the bar.Midships there is a very fine Great Western metal staircase to a second floor lounge and external seating area.On my visit there wasnt much in the way of guest ales just the awful GK Ruddles Best,Abbot Ale and Doom Bar so I had to make do with a bottle of BrewDog Elvis Juice.
Take a look at the interior but dont bother targeting this pub for exciting real ale.
