Yes a very impressive entrance with a mosaic proclaiming ownership by Bernards of Edinburgh. There’s been an attempt at respecting the old architecture in the front 30 feet, art nouveau anaglypta, repro fireplace, old looking furniture, let down a bit by the pallet wood and dodgy artwork. Further back it goes to pot, apart from the rather good bar back, it has had a standard town centre pub treatment inflicted upon it. The bar back obviously started life elsewhere and has been drastically shortened to fit here. A couple of T-Bars and two hand pumps giving a no surprises beer choice, the cask beers being Landlord and Deuchars, how do these cheap and nasty Scottish beers get that old ashtray taste? Looking at you Belhaven as well. Toilets upstairs accessed via a door at the front entrance.

My first pub upon arrival into Berwick was this town centre locals' boozer. I was hoping for something a little more adventurous than the Greene King IPA that was on, but service was friendly and there was quite a lively atmosphere for a midweek afternoon. Horse racing was being shown on TVs. There probably is worse in Berwick itself. But I didn't experience it.

The bizarre and beautiful Art Deco glazed and funnelled frontage immediately grabs your attention. The promise dies on entering, the inside being a long and fairly bland knock-through. The servery is modern but at least ornate (an assumed 90s insertion). Bright and warm on a cold dreary evening which is something that couldn’t be said for a number of other nearby places. Two pumps with GK OSH on and, whilst barely drinkable as a brew, was in surprisingly decent nick (NBSS 3.5), served-up by an efficient and friendly mature barmaid. The theme tune from Convoy came on and I thought “it could be much worse in Berwick” (which came to pass).
