Pub SignMan left this review about The Old Derby
Once described in the local press as Croydon's most dangerous pub, I'd never really fancied paying a visit to this place, but popped in recently for a swift lunchtime half.
The pub gives the impression of being incomplete, with a small bar and limited basic seating at the front and a large open area at the rear, which has a couple of sofas and not much else. This spartan interior suggests that it may be used as a dancefloor area for their club nights, which were being promoted by flyers on the tables. A second room to the left had a few more seats and gave access to the decked area at the front of the pub which seems popular in summer months. Large windows at the front, mean that the bar area is well lit, although the rear of the pub is exceptionally gloomy.
The barman seemed friendly and the handful of customers were certainly colourful characters, but harmless enough. There were no hand pumps in sight, just Guinness and a couple of lager and cider choices.
The pub certainly has something of a community feel to it, but it serves a pretty grim part of Croydon and its shabby, half finished look doesn't make it an appealing proposition.
