I've been here a few times over the years, mostly when watching Leeds Rhinos at Wakefield Trinity's ground, which is an easy 15 minute walk away. (I remember coming here once for a game on a Bank Holiday and being surprised to find it not open: Monday opening at 4pm is inflexible, it seems.) This was my first visit since they moved the bar from the upper floor. The counter has 10 hand pumps, mostly Fernandes beers. One was sporting two cider clips, and one next to it had their own rhubarb flavoured beer - May The Force Be With You - I had just missed the Rhubarb Festival over the weekend, and the owner was bemoaning the fact that the special beer had not sold out. (She reckoned it was because there was too much choice, but I think it's because the ninth beer has rhubarb in it.) I went for the very good Fernandes Great Northern IPA 5.1% (NBSS 4). The upper floor can now be accessed via some stairs past the bar counter, which go up through a large hole in the ceiling into the former pub area above. The big opening helps make the new room seem lighter than it would otherwise be, and the old collection of inn signs is displayed to good effect in what now seems more like a gallery, with light pouring in from the window panels in the roof.
