Open plan town pub with a dogleg counter along the left hand wall. A long room is to the right along the front elevation with a beer garden to the rear. Two hand pumps are surrounded by five way T-bars and Stella and Madri solos, Old Speckled Hen and Landlord on, I risked the OSH and it was vinegar heated to about 60° F, I had a lager instead but the cask beer remained on sale. Usual keg choice from predominantly Burton upon Trent with Taddy thrown in. Badly opened out there's a lot of pillars, the right side has a pool table, screens and various height seating options. Piped music is a given but at low volume.

Samuel Pepys is a high-street boozer with an open plan laminate floored bar area with seating and a pool table in amongst supporting columns to the right which are faced by a serving counter on the left-hand wall where standard and premium keg products are available. There’re also two hand pumps, one of which was in use drawing TT Landlord. Televisions throughout were airing muted Sky Sports while some background music played during a midweek visit, I’m sure the sound would’ve been turned up on the televisions once the football had kicked off later in the evening. I thought the service was polite, so I’d probably pop in here for one every now and again if I lived locally, which I don’t.

A high street pub which has been under new ownership for the last 11 days, during which time it’s been renovated and redecorated. It was unnervingly quiet when we visited at what should have been a busy time, which the landlord put down to being new in. On arrival we were informed that we’d just missed the kitchen, but the landlord then offered to knock up a quick curry for us, which I have to say went down very well. To quote the eponymous diarist: “Strange to see how a good dinner and feasting reconciles everybody”. Ales on were Landlord, Ghost Ship and Doombar, in reasonable condition. The landlord and his lady friend were sociable and went out of their way to talk to us, and I hope they make a success of this pub. I’d be happy to come back and eat here next time I’m in the town.
