The entrance to Mother Mary’s opens onto a staircase with access to a large open plan downstairs bar and an upstairs bar with at least three different sunken seating areas, including one that is faced by a stage in the left rear corner. The counter across the rear wall supports premium and craft keg, the hand pumps have been removed. The televisions through were airing muted Paralympics and there was an act setting up on the stage who looked, and ultimately sounded, like a student singer. Being a Monday the downstairs bar was closed, however on the way to the toilet I did see that there are two pool tables, a dartboard and a large screen for airing Sky Sports down there. This is a student bar that I expect gets rammed Thurs – Sat.

Lurking down a back street next to Oxford Road station it’s a student oriented place, unsurprisingly given its proximity to Manchester Metropolitan University and not much further from the real one, no I don’t mean UMIST, although that’s quite close too. Roughly on three floor levels the counter with its four pulls is on the higher level at the back, not a big place so it’s easily found. Just the one cask on, a nice Mallinsons, a touch cold but in very good nick. The keg choice is best described as mainstream craft, eg Beavertown, Camden plus a couple of popular Europeans, Flensburg and Erdinger. Bit of an old mix with furnishings as you’d expect but, apart from the wooden benches, comfortable. Probably packed at night in term time.
