I was fairly dismissive of this branch of Tim’s Empire when I first visited it some 15 years ago and after having chosen to use it twice yesterday, I think in fairness I should up it a little.
Firstly, we utilised it early doors for tea and toast, because if there is a decent café within short walking distance of the Elephant and Castle tube station exits, we didn’t find it.
And then, having only an hour for lunch and under pressure not to be late we went for what we hoped would be a safe option and it delivered OK. Two people working behind the bar taking orders from real punters instead of fulfilling app orders, who seemed to know what they were doing. Plenty of clean tables, all urinals working for us and most importantly our four mains came out promptly and together, so all of our target objectives achieved.
However, as a pub building and pub experience goes, it is still pretty bland and boring with no real discerning features to raise it above the very average.
On the ale front all twelve pumps in operation but with the dreaded Trilogy of Doom taking up six of them and with Hobgoblin Gold and Mad Squirrel Unity badged on each bank, only four ales outside the Trinity available. The other two were Windsor and Eton Conqueror Black IPA and fortunately a very decent Thornbridge Jaipur at £4.39 for a pint. I think the best complement I can give it is that it fulfilled a need.

A medium sized , modernish Spoons, fairly typical as the chain goes, slow to serve, slow to clear tables, unaware of whose next in line to be served, five festival beers clipped up but only two available.

Classic old skool Spoons-U-Like (2000 opener) in a fairly hideous building, facing an appalling roundabout/road junction. Inside is a long and shallow room with wood panelling and a neat drawing room feel on the right-hand side. Already ferociously busy at 4.45pm on a Friday. Three guest ales, my Southwark Borough Market Brown was pretty perfunctory with a long pour taint (NBSS 2). A convenience stop only.
