The death of hospitality is greatly exaggerated in this part of the world! I suppose it was New Years Day but seeing a barrier placed across the only access point with "please wait to be seated" was not what was expected for the casual drinker!
I managed to negotiate my way into a tiny drinkers bar - which of course, was catering for the overspill of people who couldnt dine in the main restaurant. Or outside.
Fortunate enough to get a seat in the narrowest corridor part of the bar and to get served relatively quickly after a pensioner who's entire family and friends all drank Guinness.
A decent Rebellion Huntsman (anyone know what it is rebranded, as this is the only place its on sale?), as you would expect for a Good Beer Guide Pub.
Too busy to be an enjoyable drinking experience, but fair play to them for having a destination pub/restaurant.

Quinno expertly sums up the decor of this three-roomed pub in the owned estate of Hambleden. The bar serves what was once two rooms, albeit knocked through: one a snug with two handpumps and the other narrower, with six handpumps but precious little room if barflies are congregated at the bar and the window seat opposite occupied. A further room with semi-bar counter is located up a small corridor at the right and back to the left, so behind the bar itself, as well as a standalone dining area to thr right off the end of the corridor. Rebellion IPA and Windsor & Eton Last Drop on the first two pumps, with just Brain's Rev James and a Rebellion yearly/monthly one-off called Afterburner on the six other pumps. Four pound-fifty seemed rather excessive for a pint of the W&E (although it was on good form) and a weeknight after work visit saw this a little "locally", albeit in more of a plummy-voiced way.

Bit of an unfortunate revisit. A wonderful day when the place should have been at its zenith, but chaos reigned throughout. Atrocious bar service, a Houdini manager, glasses piling up everywhere and plenty of overheard complaints about the food. I gave up waiting at the bar! Fortunately for me a companion toughed it out and eventually appeared with a decent pint of Saltaire...20 minutes later...

A long time in the revisit stakes and certainly quite a lot has changed here in the meantime – the Estate has spent a lot of money here (in 2012 by the looks of it) with an extension and a fairly major interior reshaping. However it has been done pretty well. The main bar is still a single room with half carpet and herringbone flooring plus ‘war green’ and battleship shades and third length wood panelling. The dining room is to the rear in an extension that is quite upmarket but again fairly comfy. The toilets are now inside and the garden has had an overhaul and looks pretty good. Pretty stunned to see 8 ales over 7 pumps (surely they can’t shift all that?) and all were local ales including Malt the Brewery, Windsor & Eton, Loddon. I managed to get through 3 and the quality was good, especially the W&E Conqueror – so somebody is paying attention. Overall I was very impressed. It’s well-worth making a trip for. Rated 8.5

A three-roomed old-school country pub with some period decoration in a picturesque village. Three ales on the go (Rebellion IPA, Loddon Hullabaloo and Brakspear), the IPA and Hullabloo were both in good form. Plenty of old pump clips attest that the selection of ales change on a regular basis. There was a couple of decent whiskies too. Darts were available as well as outside lavs (in a fair state) and a large pleasant garden which looks like it'd be great in the summer and for beer festivals (a future one was being advertised). Perhaps the only real downside was that lots of the doors were wedged open on what was a fairly cold evening! Well-worth seeking out, a lovely little pub. Rated 8
